had truthers, birthers and now we've got jobbers, these people who don't believe the government data here and to those people i would quote carl sagan and say extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence and there is simply no evidence that anybody at bls did anything improper here. that number came down to 7.8% because of the household survey being very, very strong more than 800,000 jobs created in that survey. there's a technical reason for that i won't get into but that's what happened here. it's an unusual blip but it did happen and the data is real. >> to clarify, the bls is not a sort of partisan body. they sort of -- these are statitions who work through multiple administrations? >> yeah. these are career people who are economists who do this for a living. they have very, very serious. i know these guys. they take this very seriously. they don't work for hilda solis inside the department of labor. they're carved out in a separate unit. but bls is sort of culturally its own entity and there is not a shred of evidence they've manipulated this number or did so this time.

jobs were add in july and august that government auditor didn't notice in the beginning. they revised their numbers. actually, july, august were stronger than expected to the tune of 86,000. 7.8% unemployment rate. what does that mean? the best since january 2009. when we dig within these numbers, carol, we can also see that some 418,000 people entered the workforce in the month. they are feeling a little more confident about things. either that or they've been out of the workforce for so long they've got to try to get in and get a job. you've got more people coming into the workforce. overall, 114,000 jobs created. they were in health care, transportation and government jobs. government jobs, three months in a row now. we've been seeing government layoffs for many, many, many months in a row. government jobs, transportation warehousing and we've been seeing -- everything else is pretty much flat in terms of job categories. the headline, carol, 7.8% is the unemployment rate. one more jobs report until the election. >> okay. so the political implications of this already coming in. in f

that should destroy that name. we also see a man giving a rather mild critique of the government's horrific response to katrina, which many other people have given. we also see an attempt to use reverend wright to attack the president, which has failed before, but because it's failed before doesn't mean we shouldn't try it once again. stepping back, we see hannity and tucker carlson critiquing the president's accent and his tone of voice. so we have two white men who don't know the president talking about how he should speak, how a black person should speak in public, especially when they are talking to other black people, which is a really disgusting part of this whole thing and tleepsd this whole attempt to try to portray him, once again, as a scary black man who is really out for black people. he is ultimately malcolm x, that is who he is, we see him behind closed doors, which is entirely untrue. the country doesn't believe that at all. joan walsh picked up on this part of it today earlier in her piece of salon. this is the most rancid racial fear mongering i've seen in a long time. that

't have a driver's license, a government-issued photo i.d. could get the michigan state identification card. then the state said that can be used to board airplanes. we need all sorts of forms of identification. then the state changed its mind and said we'll issue a voter i.d. card that's different. only if you can't get the other card. then they changed their mind on that. the judge said i can't be sure. even though the state has now cured a lot of these problems, i can't be sure enough people are going to be able to get the right kind of identification to allow this law to go into effect. i'm going to let the state continue to educate people about the need for photo i.d. i'm going to let the state ask for photo i.d. atle positive, but enjoin the part of the law that requires voters to have photo i.d. people wanted it all put on hold. the judge said i don't need to go that far. there is always the possibility the state could go back to the supreme court on this, but begin how skeptical the supreme court was when they looked at this a few weeks ago, i think it's over. that means that t

government building, a couple of miles from the white house, houses the labor department's bureau of labor statistics. the bls has been tabulating the monthly unemployment rate for more than 70 years. it's all based on a survey conducted in person and over the phone of 60,000 households every month. and here is where the numbers get crunched. amid a sea of high-walled cubicles, inside of each one, an economist sworn to secrecy and working on a specific aspect of that employment survey. tom nardone is in charge here. he's worked at bls since before ronald reagan was president. he introduced us to the economist who actually wrote this morning's unemployment rate announcement. how much of a secret is that number before you put it out? i mean, you can't call me up and tell me what the number is going to be? >> no, i can't tell anyone. it's a complete -- a complete secret. >> reporter: before the release, they are literally sworn to secrecy. the white house doesn't see their work until it's done. and nardone keeps the report in a safe in his office. you've been working here more than 20 years.
